Ask a room of people what healthcare condition consumes the greatest portion of the healthcare budget in the United States each year, and the most likely answers will be cancer (surprise — it’s not even in the top ten), heart disease (number four, at $89 billion), COVID (communicable diseases, number five), diabetes ($111 billion, number three), or dementia ($79 billion). (1)

All the times I’ve asked this question, I have yet to hear the correct answer: it’s simple, uncomplicated neck & low back pain.

Number two is other musculoskeletal diseases.

Altogether, nearly $400 billion dollars each year is spent on the management of our bony framework and the squishy bits that hold it together. It is the single greatest cause of lost workdays in the United States, and second only to mental illness & substance abuse in terms of years of productivity lost to disability, accounting for over 4 million years of life lost in 2015.
