When I was four, my parents went away to Africa for a year. My sister and I were left under the care of our two grandmas; she stayed with one, and I with the other. We didn’t see much of each other during that year and couldn’t compare who got the better deal.

My father was a part of the Soviet geology team that came to help the Nigerian government mine for nickel. My mother had the time of her life accompanying him, exploring the country and meeting people from all over the world. However, she was never completely satisfied.

As I grew up, I began to understand my mother’s urge to share her experiences with the people who were dear to her.
