The Leap of Faith: A Reflection on Bravery

It’s early Saturday morning, and here I am thinking about bravery and cowardice, about the thin line between madness and naïveté.

When talking about bravery, the iconic French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard was unapologetic, and his words have stuck with me over the years. Amid the universal mess we live in, do we embrace a bold, defiant attitude toward life, or would we rather rest in socially accepted cowardness. Do we possess the willingness to take risks and leap into the unknown without worrying what others think?

How often do we let the fear of judgment or criticism hold us back from pursuing our dreams and passions? We come up with endless explanations and justifications for the choices we make or don’t make.

It’s not a call for recklessness. Leaping into the void can lead to disaster as easily as triumph. Yet when made with care and awareness, it’s these leaps of faith that often give our lives meaning. Whether changing careers, moving to a new country, or devoting yourself to a new relationship or endeavor, the risk is inherently part of growth and fulfillment.

Looking back on my own life, my biggest regrets stem not from the risks I’ve taken (and there were so many) but from those I avoided out of fear or concern for what can be a public failure. All those mad times I listened to my heart and took that leap of faith have proven the most rewarding.

Though failure or judgment may come, we gain strength from knowing we had the courage to jump into the unknown.

Jean-Luc Godard followed his own advice, breaking cinematic conventions and taking bold creative risks throughout his career. While not always publicly recognized as successful (whatever success is), his boundless innovation expanded the horizons of filmmaking. And he did so unapologetically, without explanation to the critics or establishment.

So next time we stand at the edge of our own void, torn between taking the leap or playing it safe, we better listen to our authentic inner voices, blocking out the chorus of doubts and judgments. Focused on the call of what might be, not the fear of what others don’t understand. Because, in the end, we only owe an explanation to ourselves.
