Breaking Religion Chains: My Path Away from Christianity
I never thought I’d write the words “Why I’m No Longer a Christian.” I haven’t been able to speak them out loud. I haven’t even verbalized them to my wife, though I suspect she already knows.
Before I tell you why I intentionally have left the Christian faith, let me clarify something: I am still a “Jesus follower.” However, I no longer attend a church, I don’t read the Bible, I don’t pray before meals, and I don’t share many of the beliefs of traditional Christianity.
Here’s what I do believe:
Accepting Jesus is not the only way to get to heaven.
While staunch Christians will tell you that you are going to burn in hell if you don’t “Accept Christ as your personal Lord and Savior,” I think that’s a scare tactic to get you to join the club.
I know a fair amount of families where the parents have made the Christian profession of faith, but their kids are unbelievers. I ask you, if God loves you, is he going to throw your children into the pit of hell to be forever in pain with 3rd degree burns all over their bodies?
If that were true, I wouldn’t find him a God I’d want to follow or his heaven a place I’d want to be without my family and friends.
