A New Love

From the carnal to the spiritual

take all of me, sweet Spirit
don’t let me fade away

blood curdles in my veins

breathe into me new life
chase away the doubt and despair

the stench of death looms
heavy, heavy upon my heart

lift these burdens from my bones
give me new wings of flight

never wanted to be this dead inside

release these memories from my mind
that twist into ashen visions

would have preferred one last breath
one last lingering kiss
to spiral in your sweet embrace

give to me instead joy and love
and contentment you know I desire

Why wasn’t our existence meant to be?

fill me, renew me
make me whole again

A contrapuntal poem is influenced by the musical world. Two melodies combined to create a third melody. In this poem, I’ve combined a spiritual poem with a more mournful poem to create what I hope is a relatable poem. I’ve never tried this form before, so I am not sure what mess this may be for others.

Here is the first poem in its entirety:

take all of me, sweet Spirit
don’t let me fade away
breathe into me new life
chase away the doubt and despair
lift these burdens from my bones
give me new wings of flight
release these memories from my mind
that twist into ashen visions
give to me instead joy and love
and contentment you know I desire
fill me, renew me
make me whole again

And here is the second poem in its entirety:

blood curdles in my veins
the stench of death looms
heavy, heavy upon my heart
never wanted to be this dead inside
would have preferred one last breath
one last lingering kiss
to spiral in your sweet embrace
Why wasn’t our existence meant to be?
