It is the consequence of showing kindness, forgiveness, and generosity.

The Bible Book of Micah 6:8 showed how the redeemed people of God then (presumed to be former Israelites) wanted to worship God. They believed worship signifies rituals, external rites, and rhetorics. They were even willing to sacrifice their firstborn in adoration to God. But the answer they got was different from what they were expecting:

ā€œHe has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.ā€ Micah 6:8

Mercy Isnā€™t Earned, It is Given

This clearly shows that what people actually need then, and even today is a change of heart. A heart that shows sympathy to others, a heart that loves justice and shows mercy to all alike. We must avoid saying in our hearts that people get what they deserve. We will never know why some are in a situation they found themselves in.

Love to the loveless that they might lovely be, facing insults without retaliation, reaching out to the lonely, the neglected, and the addicted to offering them the love of God without expecting nothing in return.

Act justly, not according to our own personal sense of right and wrong, but according to Godā€™s loving-kindness in which He has shown to all. When we look at some deprived areas of the world, it is not that there is not enough to go around, there is a distribution problem, that denies some areas and gives the surplus to another.

Africa for example is rich in natural resources, but its wealth is being carted away by the developed West to the detriment of the Continent and its residents. So the political and social systems have created famine and unnecessary suffering in the world. How are we as individuals respond to that?

Dana Arcuri replied to this question well,

ā€œOur job on earth isnā€™t to criticize, reject, or judge. Our purpose is to offer a helping hand, compassion, and mercy. We are to do unto others as we hope they would do unto us.ā€ Dana Arcuri,

and in the Encyclopedia of the Bible,

ā€œIt is evident that mercy combines a strong emotional element, usually identified as pity, compassion, or love, with some practical demonstration of kindness in response to the condition or needs of the object of mercy.ā€ ā€” Encyclopedia of the Bible

There is always room to show others, mercy, compassion, and love.

The Takeaways

  • Living a life of mercy, justice, and love is a true reflection of WHO God is.
  • Our rituals, sacrifices, and religious ceremonies are actually NOT what God wants from you and me, but rather a change of heart that is loving and compassionate to others.
  • Acting justly means taking impartial and fair decisions in our business and personal lives.
  • ā€œCreating an uplifting environment for others through the words we use and showing compassion goes outside of the home as well.ā€ Chris Johnston,
