How is your heart? Do you see the good in others? Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

I remember those memory verses we learned in Sunday School and the prayers that were repeated regularly that were supposed to make us better Christians. This was the way those teachers then thought we were to improve our lives. The way of doing, and this took a chunk of our daily activities.

I read about a Muslim bus driver on a London road that suddenly stopped his bus on a busy road to pray. The time was one of five daily prayers Muslims observed. This man totally ignored the confusion and disturbance he caused on the road that day. Most of us are like that in our daily lives, we are the doing types. The driver probably thinks by praying at that particular hour will make him a better person.

The Way Of Being Always Leads To Building

When Jesus came to the world, he started his ministry by making disciples of men. What does this mean to us? He thought the way of love, first to God and to fellow human beings. He was well aware that living in a way of love will make right all the relationships we have with others.

In Matthew 22:37ā€“39, Jesus says, ā€œLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself.ā€

Having the right relationship with God and others will naturally impact how you live and deal with others across the board. So the first goal of being a disciple is simply not doing, it is building up yourself with God and others. We do not want to be the one that lacks compassion and say ā€˜be warmā€™ to our cold neighbours when we can easily provide warmth.

Beware Of Bareness Of A Busy Life

I know some busy people in the Christian Circles, Pastors, Deacons, Deaconess, Choir Masters, Sunday School Teachers and so on, who are too preoccupied with Church activities that they have no room for a listening ear or visit the sick or sympathise with someone or the homeless. They believe in doing chores rather than being.

The fact is that if you fill your life with activities, you are easily fazed out, physically and emotionally exhausted but spiritually deficient, yet you may not realise that simply because you misunderstand engaging in such activities with building a personal relationship with God.

Self Identity Determines Behaviour

Do you know who you are? Or more importantly, how do you think of yourself? This is a question you should ask yourself because who you are, compliments what you do.

If you feel loved and appreciated in your relationship, you are happy and wants to do more. You are ready to be selfless and go the extra mile. This can be either a work or a love relationship. The opposite is true as well, if you feel unappreciated, you can either strive to be better or become resentful and bitter.

If you are still quarrelling, full of anger rather than understanding, bitterness and hatred, then you are still a spiritual babe. Until you recognise who you are with these traits, you will not work towards getting rid of them and grow towards mature and discipline individuals.

Who you are as a person? Are you building up others with love and affection? Are you any good examples at all? If you realise the immense blessings bestowed on mankind, you inclusive, you will live your life with gratitude and appreciation. This appreciation will compel you to carry others along.

The Takeaways

  • Life is what happens to you while youā€™re busy making other plans. ā€” John Lennon
  • ā€˜Over the years I have come to understand being a disciple as having a right relationship with God, with myself, with my family, with other believers, and with the world around me. For me, being a disciple is all relational. When any of these significant relationships in my life are not right, I know I am not being the disciple that Christ has called me to be.ā€™ Ken Adams
  • ā€˜Doing is about reactionary response; being is about thoughtfully, prayerfully, and intentionally bringing what the Bible teaches to bear upon every aspect of life.ā€™ Steve Arterburn.
  • ā€˜How you SEE yourself affects how you ACT.ā€™ David Balzer.
  • God wants us to work, but He prioritizes being with Him above doing for Him.
