Visiting the Grand Canyon

Tears rolled down my cheeks

It was undoubtedly an ecstatic spiritual experience, the first one I ever had.

The year was 1983, and I took the Greyhound Bus from Chicago to Los Angeles to visit my cousin. My first vacation in three years.

On the return trip, I took a detour from Flagstaff and went to the Grand Canyon.

Have you ever been there?

I was first introduced to Grand Canyon when I lived in Pakistan. McKenna’s Gold! The entire movie was filmed on location in Grand Canyon. One of my all-time favorite movies with an all-star cast. The scenery was mesmerizing.

When I arrived there and stood at the North Rim, to say that I was speechless would be an understatement. But there is no other way to describe it. I was in total awe and overwhelmed by the vastness of natural beauty that lay spread for miles and miles in front of my eyes.

Imagine if you can — one hundred and eighty-five miles long, ten miles wide, and more than a mile deep. I had never experienced humility before.

It was mind-boggling as I thought about it. The humongous vista would barely amount to a dash on a wall-sized map of the world. Put that in perspective against our planet in the solar system, the Milky Way, and the Universe.

I still get goosebumps when I think about it. I’ve revisited it a couple of more times, but it never was the same experience.

If you’ve never been there, put it on your bucket list. If you’ve been there, what was your experience?
