South Brisbane has long been the cultural hub of Brisbane, home to loads of great museums and performing arts centres, including Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA, QPAC, and SparkLab, to name just a few.

In addition to its traditional centres for the arts, South Brisbane street art has also blossomed, with massive, thoughtfully curated projects bringing vibrancy to areas of South Brisbane that were previously dull and lifeless.

We are, of course, talking about the Pillars Project and Fish Lane. Two must-visit destinations for local street art lovers or any Brisbane visitor with an appreciation for art. These two spots display some of the best artwork in the city, totalling some 20+ murals between them.

There is a full downloadable map down the bottom to guide you to both.

Pillars Project Street Art

On the corner of Montague Road and Merivale Street (here), you will be immediately stopped in your tracks by the nine massive murals lighting up the pillars under the roadway here.

We’ve written about the Pillars Project in full here, but to recap, the Pillars Project was brought to Brisbane by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and Queensland Rail, in 2014, for the G20 in celebration of Brisbane’s history and culture.

As it stands now, the Pillars Project is a collaboration with some of Australia’s best contemporary street artists, Drapl, Rone, Claire Foxton, Guido van Helten, Frank and Mimi, Fintan Magee, Mik Shida, Gus Eagleton, and Gimiks Born.

It’s recommended to start your street art hunt of South Brisbane here at the Pillars Project. There isn’t much else in this immediate area, so it’s better to start here and then work up an appetite which can be satisfied once you get to Fish Lane.

Check out more work by Gus Eagleton here.

Fish Lane Street Art

Fish Lane is conveniently located on Fish Lane, so it’s super easy to find, and the art is impossible to miss. From top to bottom there are huge murals, and even sweet installations by a range of local and international artists, all brought together by the Brisbane Street Art Festival.

We’ve covered Fish Lane in full here, but in a nutshell, it’s four blocks of street art goodness that gets a facelift every year or so by the festival and features huge name street artists from near and far.

Down here you can find pieces from Sofles, Blu Art Xinja, Mimi, Bao Ho, Ms Saffaa, Fintan Magee, Fuzeillear, and more.

Check out more by Sofles here.

Check out more from Mimi (a.k.a. Emily Devers) here.
