If you’re from Australia, Toowoomba is likely one of the last spots you would ever think to go and explore for fun. Those who grew up there and left (that’s me) once vowed never to go back, and those who’d only heard of it through others knew enough to keep them from ever bothering to go.

It was boring!

So how on Earth did this sleepy town, which until only a few years ago was known for nothing more than The Carnival of Flowers (*yawn*), come to be one of Australia’s must-visit street art spots?

Amazing piece by Mik Shida at the top of Ruthven Street. Check out more of his work here.

That would be thanks to the guys at First Coat. Coordinating street art festivals, art talks and workshops, First Coat have injected colour into this once sleepy town and given it the creative pizazz it so desperately missed when I was growing up.

The exceptional quality of these murals, matched with the pride of humble locals, makes a tour of Toowoomba street art one of the more unique street art hunting experiences.

Do expect to be greeted by locals to discuss their favourites.

Stunning piece on Ruthven Street by Fintan Magee. Check out more of his work here.

While the guys at First Coat have done an amazing job of documenting their murals, they do seem to be missing an easy to download Google maps version that you can simply click and follow. So I’ve made one for you below. But I do encourage you to check out their site for updates and more information on the artists and stories behind the work.

** FYI I’ve not listed every artist in the map, there are many spots that have loads to see, so I’ve just made a note of some and you’ll be surprised with others.

For a sneak peek at Toowoomba’s hidden laneways (teaser below from Gimiks Born), check out our full Toowoomba Laneways piece.
