This tournament had commentary by Junikko, a team known from Splatoon 1. They were a unique team that ran some unorthodox weapons and were more strategy orientated. One of the casters, foomison, is also the strategist for Libalent Calamari.

Semifinals: Oretachi Free Sozai vs Sore Ike! Darumaka!

Game 1

One of the casters said H3D has a difficult time against dualies + chargers. There was some talk that Main Power Up might be helpful in that situation to help with kills. Another mentioned you might lose painting power if you do that.

Game 2

They thought the Triggerfish counterpick was targeted at the dualie players, but they also mentioned they don’t think Carbon is good on the map either. But they did think that Ballpoint + charger together are strong.
Free Sozai’s comp allows them to help each other from both sides (Burst Bombs, Explosher have a lot of range), which seemed like it’d be difficult for Darumaka to deal with.

Game 3

Casters didn’t really agree with the counterpick to Inkblot. Neither team had a real comp advantage, but one caster mentioned it’s also about your own confidence. The game ended up being completely one-sided in Free Sozai’s favour.

Game 4

Unsure about the Shellendorf counterpick either. Casters pointed out that both sides have switched to Firefin Splatterscope and were excited to see a Kensa Glooga. Darumaka seemed to struggle against the Slosher Deco and Carbon Deco combination.

Semifinals: Sentai Shimenaingers〜 vs Otsumami

Just a note that Otsumami signed up with different names, so I’m not 100% sure who some of the players are.

Game 1

With Manta Maria as the first map, there’s a lot of talk about how strong Beakons are now, especially on Ballpoint Nouveau. Casters were surprised at Shimenaingers’ 2x Kensa Sloshing Machine comp as well as Otsumami’s Luna pick. They kept switching to overhead to see where Beakons were being placed. The Kensa Sloshing Machines having Fizzy Bombs was great, but Splashdown can make getting back in pretty difficult.

Game 2

Casters were wondering how good Beakons are on Goby, but were then surprised to see Shimenaingers going with a 3 Splashdown comp. Someone mentioned that the 2x Fizzy Bomb pressure + charger felt like a strong combination, like your movement is restricted.

At one point in the match, the 2x Fizzy Bombs were buying time for their teammates to spawn. They weren’t fully painting the zone, but they were able to keep neutralizing it. One of the Kensa Sloshing Machines used Splashdown and actually nullified the Explosher’s Bubbles. Not something I’ve often seen in high level play because the Splashdown would usually die.

Game 3

Kelp Dome is a really good Ballpoint stage. So good that Shimenaingers’s Neu switched to Ballpoint Nouveau as well. The Tenta Brella pick seemed to be working well for Otsumami. It was helping their teammates get back into the centre vs Neu on Ballpoint. foomison called the Splashdown a counter special, which looked like it worked especially well against the Baller.

Game 4

After the initial surprise at Starfish being picked, they talk about how Beakon is really strong on this stage. foomison seemed unsure about Otsumami‘s Firefin swap. I’ve heard some players say they don’t like Sting Ray on wider stages.

There was a moment where Shimenaingers were able to cap zone when the Kensa used Baller to move into the zone then both Kensa Sloshines used Splashdown. But then they were quickly wiped. They did similar things later on, like 1 Splashdown + 1 Baller or both Splashdowns onto the zone, but they’re unable to keep control. It didn’t work out in the end, but the casters still thought it was an interesting idea.

Game 5

Casters talked about Kensa Sloshing Machine being strong on MakoMart, particularly because of Fizzy Bombs. Otsumami’s Explosher got their Bubbles deleted by Splashdown at least twice this match. Their team was unable to consistently kill Splashdown unless the Ballpoint or Slosher Deco were alive.
The Explosher had a very tough time this game. The casters were thinking that maybe Custom Explosher would have been a better choice, but one of the casters brought up how Splashdown is also really good against Baller now.

Finals: Sentai Shimenaingers〜 vs Oretachi Free Sozai

Reminder that Free Sozai were unable to counterpick to Camp Triggerfish, while Shimenaingers were unable to counterpick to Goby Arena and MakoMart.

Game 1

Casters surprised at Shimenaingers 3 Splashdown comp again.

Game 2

Shimenaingers countered to New Albacore Hotel and the casters think it’s because it’s a poor Carbon stage. Norishio gave them a lot of trouble in the first game, but he can play other weapons. Everyone thinks he’ll use Squeezer.
foomison noted that Shimepii switched to the regular Sloshing Machine, meaning Shimenaingers comp has 2 Sting Rays.

Game 3

Everyone is excited for Mein to play 96g. This is Mein’s first game in Top 4 and they proved to be quite useful. They had top KA, so the casters figured they must have moved well throughout the match.

Game 4

Nothing surprising here. It’s a map we’ve seen Free Sozai enjoy playing on in the past.

Game 5

The host of the lobby DC’d in the first few seconds. Shimenaingers wins by default.
