Spoke spots new, colorful community bikes around the city.

The ever-colorful city of Washington, DC has upped its cyclical ante, allowing new bike share companies into the market. The Metro DC-owned Capital Bikeshare’s red, dockable fleet is being challenged by the likes of Mobike, LimeBike, Spin, and Jump DC.

Three of these new rides boast a formidable trait — they are untethered. After scanning a QR to begin rental, the rider can jet off and, once their destination has been reached, ditch the bike on the sidewalk. An electronic lock bar clicks into place until the next rider comes along.

Jump DC is the outlier, sporting a mini engine to match pedal power. The Spoke team, being bike-lovers, have been scouting out the new palette around town. LimeBike and Mobike seem to be stealing the show, though Capital Bikeshare clearly has its roots set deep.

If you give one of the newcomers a chance, let us know your take!
