‘Back To School’ trend spiralling on social media

The back to school trend on social media is getting bigger year on year and is likely to peak with more search interest in the topic than ever before in 2018.
Back to school videos have become a staple on social media from August through to mid September, with creators sharing all aspects of the process from outfits, makeup and morning routines to stationary hauls, design ideas for personalising school equipment and classroom snack suggestions.
The trend is so far reaching that several verticals can easily take advantage of the content including fashion, beauty, health and well being, arts and crafts and food amongst others.
The back to school trend has also sparked several other sub trends.
One content format that is currently trending on YouTube inspired by the back to school conversation is the Back To School Switch Up Challenge.
Here creators, usually two, secretly unveil to the audience a back to school item that is either desirable or “boring”, if they have the boring item they need to sell it to their partner in order to swap it for the more desirable item.
Videos of this challenge are gaining millions of views, for example this one by channel SIS vs BRO has generated more than 6.5M views in a week:
Or this switch up challenge by creator Ruby Rube, which has gained more than 2.6M views in the same time frame:
Last year YouTube search interest in the back to school trend peaked at the end of August.

As can be seen by the graph, year on year for the last five years there has been increased search interest for ‘back to school’ on YouTube.
Looking at the data from the last 12 months it is clear that there is more interest in the topic than this time last year.

Meaning it is likely that the peak of the 2018 back to school trend will be slightly later than in previous years.
The highest volume of YouTube searches for back to school has come from Poland, followed by Czechia, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and Canada.

However, as indicated by the map, interest in the trend is prevalent almost worldwide.
To accommodate the high demand in this topic creators are producing more content related to it and it is likely, along with the highest search volume for back to school, this year will also see the most back to school videos.
