Copying may be the sincerest form of flattery, but the latest trend to gain traction on YouTube is the turning my sister/best friend into me.

Complete with matching outfits, hair and makeup, YouTubers particularly in the lifestyle, entertainment and beauty categories are going all out to transform their chosen loved one into an exact replica of themselves.

The videos of this challenge trend document the process of the transformation, usually step by step as each milestone is accomplished and are often accompanied by a Q&A or sharing of stories about each other.

For example, YouTuber AlishaMarie published this video last week and it has gained more than 1.4M views.

It also has a good engagement rate with more than 8,000 comments so far.

Videos like this one started appearing in the last two weeks with many mainstream YouTubers with big followings catching on last week.

Primarily the trend is prevalent in English speaking countries, and mostly so far the videos have originated in the US.

However, now the big names on YouTube are taking up the challenge it is likely to spread further over the next couple of weeks.

Interest in the topic has followed the same pattern.

Google Trends: YouTube search interest past 90 days

As can be seen from the Google Trends data from the last 90 days, transforming my sister into me became a trending topic with YouTube audiences at the end of January.

Search interest increased through the first weeks of February and is continuing to hold strong.

A variant has also emerged in the YouTube community with creators transforming their best friend instead of a sister.

For example, beauty YouTuber NikkieTutorials turned her bestie into the image of herself in a video that currently has over 4M views.

As you can see from the video, the format is the same as the sister challenge with the goal to look like identical twins at the end.

We predict this trend will keep going for the rest of the month and is likely to produce a relatively high number of videos based on it’s popularity with creators and audiences alike.
