Hello Spooky pets friends and family and happy spooky week! We’re less than a week out fro Halloween. This is our favorite time of year, but the end of October also signals the end of Black Cat Awareness Month.

If you follow these sort of issues, you’ve probably read a few think pieces in recent years about how black cats are not actually more likely to be abandoned, abused and avoided (particularly in October) due to superstitions surrounding them. However, if you know anyone who works in animal rescue, animal services, animal medicine, etc, they have anecdotal stories. If we’ve all seen it, it’s probably real.

And because it’s real, this week, the Spooky Pets community chose to sponsor Lucas, a young community cat from Los Angeles who was shot multiple times with a pellet gun while sleeping outside of one of his caretakers’ homes.

After Lucas was shot on July 22, he was rescued by Black Cat Holistic Rescue. Lucas underwent surgery to remove several BBs, but one of them was lodged against his spine, paralyzing his back legs and tail.

Today, Lucas is still paralyzed, but he is going to physical therapy and acupuncture weekly and there is a decent chance he will walk again. The team at BCHR is charged with pulling black cats and kittens from the street and from kill shelters in LA and making sure that they get the best care available. They are committed to doing everything possible to get Lucas back on his feet. We have donated $1000 towards care for Lucas and the other cats pulled by BCHR.

According to the BCHR team, Lucas is sweet, gentle, affectionate and friendly. Lucas’ foster guides him through his physical therapy exercises daily and also expresses his bladder three times daily. Lucas will be adoptable, and hopefully will live a long happy life with increased or full mobility.

To keep up with Lucas and learn more about available cats, check out the Black Cat Holistic Rescue Instagram account, or click through to their website.

As always, and especially at this time of year, look out for the cats in your neighborhood. They’ve been our companions and collaborators for over 10,000 years.

We‘re linking this blog to a Spooky Pet auction on Crypto.com/NFT. We will donate a portion of proceeds (all earnings over $25 minus transaction fees) from the auction directly to Black Cat Holistic Rescue to help raise funds for Lucas and his friends. If you purchase or win a Spooky Pet, you will be automatically authed into the Spooky Pets community and will get voting rights, access to member perks, and the weekly Spooky Pet newsletter, where we update members on the progress of the project and our previous featured animals. You will also get the opportunity to help us develop the Spooky Pets universe and build it into a media franchise with a philanthropic heart.

This week, we’re auctioning Spooky Pet #9721 aka Lucas! The auction will end on Friday October 28th, so go bid while you can :)

AND please consider bidding in our Halloween auction! This year, we’re auctioning off four pieces of original Spooky Pets concept art. 50%. of gross revenues will go directly into the Spooky Pets philanthropic fund and will help us continue to give back and donate to needy animals every week.

Happy Halloween!
