5 Spiritual Ways To Move On From The Past

1. Identification — you are not your past. When you identify with your past you are limiting yourself to being defined by it. In letting go of the past we need to recognise that it is not the past that defines us, but rather what we choose to do with today.
2. Lessons — what can you learn? One of the reasons the past lingers in our present day is because we have yet to acknowledge what those experiences were sent to teach us. When you are reminded of your past, ask yourself — what can I learn from this experience to improve my life today?
3. Present day — where are you now? Often times we may experiences flashbacks of past events, this can be particularly troubling if we have had traumatic experiences. When this happens acknowledge that you are being shown these images to remind you that they are not happening today. Appreciate the fact that you’ve survived 100% of your roughest days so far and that today can be whatever you want it to be.
4. Perspective — how you choose to see things. If you view your past as failures and mistakes — you will feel negatively towards it. If you see that these were stepping stones along the way to making you who you are today — you will know that they were necessary stages in your process of evolution. Adopt the perspective that works for you.
5. People — spend time with people you love. Those who truly love you will support your growth today and will not remind you of who you once were unless it is relevant to the now. Spend time with people who make you forget to check your phone — this will help to keep you present and enjoy the now.
Moving on from the past is a difficult process, but we need to recognise that living in the shadow of yesterday will block out the light of joy from today. It is ultimately up to you how you choose to live your life.
We all make choices, but at the end of the day it’s our choices that make us.
