7 Ways To Recognise When You’re Living Through The Ego

1. Arguments — you need to be right. If you are arguing with someone and you know their argument is flawed — do you still need to correct them? If you feel the need to “put them in their place” this is because you are living through the ego — which loves to feel superior to others. When you are living through spirit you acknowledge that everyone learns in their own time at their own pace and do not feel the need to be “right”.
2. Showing off — you need to feel important. The ego loves the illusion of separation because this is an opportunity for it to create an identity for itself. If you feel the need to show off your material things to make others envious — this is because the ego thrives off of the attention and identifies itself as the owner of things. Spirit, on the other hand, knows there is no separation and enjoys its material things without having to flaunt them to others.
3. Opinions — you thrive off of the opinions of others. The ego loves to be stroked, praised and adored — this is the reason why many people behave in accordance with what others think of them. Receiving praise or admiration from parents, colleagues, friends or lovers is a way for the ego to feel safe and secure. Spirit knows “how you see me has nothing to do with me and everything to do with you” and satisfies itself instead of doing so through others.
4. Presence — you find it hard to be in the now. The now doesn’t involve material things, the opinions of others or any notions of the past or future — hence why the ego despises it. The ego cannot identify itself with past events or material things during the state of complete presence — this is why so many of us seek out distractions such as TV, sex, relationships & drugs. Spirit knows that the now is all that exists and appreciates each moment without having to project itself into the past or future.
5. Pursuing material things — you value things more than feelings. You pursue material things or social statuses to gratify your sense of self because the ego needs physical evidence of its identity. Becoming attached to material possessions or the idea of owning them is what gives the ego much of its power. Spirit knows that the way you feel is far more important than what you own — hence why it is satisfied with love.
6. Something’s missing — there’s a void inside you which can never be filled. Regardless of what you buy, wear, eat, drink or do there is an emptiness inside you that you have not yet learnt how to fill. The ego will always search for something outside of yourself to fill this void, but spirit knows that all the answers to be found inside of you.
7. Authenticity — you find it hard to be yourself. The ego masquerades under false identities as a defence mechanism. If the ego is rejected by others based on a false persona it has created, the true self has not been rejected and therefore the ego doesn’t have to acknowledge this as a true rejection. Spirit knows that there is no such thing as rejection — we are not supposed to resonate with every single person we meet and authenticity is the key to finding the tribe you will resonate with.
Feed the spirit, starve the ego.
Peace & positive vibes.
