5 Things You Need To Know About The Ego

1. It’s a tool. Many of us are using this powerful tool without having read the manual. Once we start using the ego in a conscious way we can create positive change in our lives without being focused on the gratification we feel as a result of achieving our goals.

2. It’s neither good nor bad. Labelling the ego as “good” or “bad” imposes judgment on ourselves and this creates unnecessary suffering. We must transcend these labels and observe the ego as a necessary part of our human experience.

3. It wants to be significant. The ego strives for a sense of separateness from others in order to define itself — perhaps through material things or achievements. When we acknowledge that we are all one we reduce separation and conflict in our lives because we understand that the conflict we experience with others is the conflict we are experiencing within ourselves.

4. You don’t need to destroy it. The ego is a part of us, we must learn to love it and accept it as a part of ourselves. When we see it as something that must be destroyed we are creating resistance to what is and this results in suffering.

5. Don’t judge yourself. Acting out of ego isn’t something to be ashamed of, we’re all having a human experience and that involves making mistakes. Learning from our mistakes is how we avoid making them in the future.

Starve the ego, feed the soul.
