After spending most of my career working on open source software, building hobby projects that got way out of hand, building cool platforms and apps for companies and solving problems with other developers in open source communities I decided to start a development studio. What services we’re offering are listed at the bottom of this article, so feel free to scroll right through.

That’s the TL;DR; version. The rest of this article will be about how I got to that decision and what led me to it. I’ll refrain from geeking out too much and (try to) keep it abstract.

Where it started

Being able to use your creativity feels good. Especially if it’s well received. Even more so if you think outside of the box and are really good at turning thought into product. It’s amazing to have the skills to turn a brilliant concept into an even better reality. Well, that’s not me. I consider myself to be a creative and curious person that’s incapable of expressing his thoughts in the form of shapes by himself; but for quite some time I tried to anyway.

Enter Septims

Septims? Septims.

Septims is a small but fun community built around the concept of learning and building in agile teams. Together with Suraj Kumar and Oguzhan Ozdemir we looked for people of all trades and invited them to join. It was very satisfying to see both beginners and professionals teaming up and working on projects together for the sole purpose of fun and learning.

Septims grew quite fast, and we got many applications. We filtered out recruiters and people looking for a place to promote their stuff. It was interesting to learn about the challenges everyone faced and satisfying to be able to give advise and help out when possible.

Egeote

One of the projects I’ve since worked on with Septims members is called Egeote which is a geo-based app that allows you to pin messages to physical locations for others to find. It since grew to be quite interesting and is still a hobby project we still work on actively.

During this project I learned things regarding design and tooling, and I enjoyed it immensely. Based on this project I’ve built several spatial APIs and learned a lot regarding optimising battery life while still gaining accuracy.

Enter Suraj Kumar

While working on Egeote with Suraj we found out that we’re both motivated to do more. We both wanted bigger and better projects. More estate to decorate with our creativity. We found a matching purpose and started talking and working on stuff together more. He showed me some of his previous work and his entry for a competition to build a fictional app.

His work was impressive. Creative, fresh and accurate. He asked for feedback every step of the way and I felt like he had the right mindset to get this done the right way.

I semi-jokingly suggested starting a studio together and he agreed. We found some other talented and motivated people to work with us and got ourselves a diverse group with a wide range of expertise.

SpoonX Studio was born.

Where it’s headed

Gathering knowledge and experience is useful but our word won’t be enough. That’s why we’re working hard to prove our worth. We’ve been building our website and portfolio, released a new NodeJS framework and are looking for more clients. Meanwhile, we’ll keep working on our hobby projects because it’s fun and helps us understand new technologies allowing us to be more creative in our solutions. We’ll also continue our open source efforts and share our solutions with the community.

What we can do today

We’ll be taking on any project that we think we can add value to, even if it’s not our core business. However, our focus will be on:

  • Mobile app development
  • API solutions including infrastructure, live (websockets and WebRTC), REST and GraphQL
  • Consulting on specific programming related issues or questions
  • Web Apps (PWA)
  • Branding
  • Design (graphical)
  • Websites

Let’s work together
