The recently concluded tournament was sprinkled with several individual moments of brilliance merged with consistent performances. Some of these performances have turned matches on its head. There are several players who burst into the scene during this World Cup and have made a name for themselves. The team of the World Cup is:-

  1. Rohit Sharma:- The Indian opener was phenomenal in a record-breaking campaign. In 9 innings, he scored a whopping 648 runs at an average of 81, scoring 5 hundreds. He had to deal with a change of roles. At the start of the campaign, Shikhar Dhawan was the chief aggressor and Rohit began steadily. After Dhawan was ruled out, Rohit had to don the aggressor’s role and the transition was seamless.
  2. Jason Roy:- The English opener formed a swashbuckling opening pair with Jonny Bairstow and led England to a maiden World Cup victory. He attacked from the start, not allowing the bowlers to settle. Despite suffering a hamstring injury midway through, he came back strongly and provided the much needed firepower. He ended the campaign with 426 runs at an average of 71 and a strike rate of 117.
  3. Joe Root:- Root was the glue which held the English batting together. While all the batsmen around him were looking for quick runs and boundaries, his role was to stick around till the end and go big at the death. Against West Indies, he opened the innings in Roy’s absence and made a splendid century. He had a solid campaign with 549 runs at an average of 68.
  4. Kane Williamson ©:- The Kiwi skipper almost won his team the trophy single-handedly. His captaincy was calculated and flawless, similar to his batting. He found himself at the middle in the powerplay several times and rescued his team from many sticky situations with his calmness. He scored 548 runs with a mammoth average of 91. He valued his wicket dearly and made it a point to stay till the end and finish for his team.
  5. Shakib Al Hasan:- The World’s top all-rounder batted the whole tournament at #3 and amazed everyone with his spectacular stroke-play. He was the most impactful player in the World Cup, averaging 86 with the bat and picking up 11 wickets. He guaranteed runs and wickets every time he stepped onto the field.
  6. Ben Stokes:- England’s hero was in top form throughout. He got the tournament off to a flier with perhaps the best catch ever held in the opener against South Africa. He was always there when England needed him, scoring crucial runs and breaking partnerships. He reserved his best for the last, conjuring up yet another rescue act to win the trophy for England. He scored 381 runs at 54.42 and picked up 7 wickets.
  7. Alex Carey (wk):- Carey was a revelation with the bat for Australia. He came in at the death and finished off several games. He averaged 62.50 and had a strike rate of 104. He rescued several top-order collapses as well.
  8. Mitchell Starc:- The Aussie quick was amongst the wickets once more and kept delivering consistently. He bowled a fuller length and executed the yorker perfectly. He ended with 27 wickets.
  9. Shaheen Shah Afridi:- Shaheen was not first choice at the start of Pakistan’s campaign but came in to replace a struggling Hasan Ali. He was accurate in the middle overs and kept forcing mistakes from the batsmen.
  10. Jofra Archer:- England’s star with the ball had a breakthrough tournament. He gelled with the squad with ease and bowled short and quick. His pace was at the high 140s constantly and had 20 wickets to his name.
  11. Jasprit Bumrah:- Bumrah was the go-to man for Virat Kohli and got wickets whenever the captain needed him to. He was excellent both in the powerplay and in the death and picked up 18 wickets.
