Is it cold in Russia?

“Oh, you are from Russia? You must be really used to the cold!” — people say when they hear that I’m from Russia.

The word ushanka derives from ushi (у́ши), “ears” in Russian.

Yes it’s cold, and that is why we always wear those funny fur hats: shapka-ushanka. It’s a cap with ear flaps that can be tied up to the crown of the cap, or fastened at the chin to protect the ears jaw and lower chin.

I’m joking

Since the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 World Cup take place in the summer, this question is being asked all the time. But you will not get frozen in Russia! The closer you get to the south the warmer the Russian climate gets. In the central part of the country summer becomes warm — even hot — which makes it possible for a good harvest of grain, fruit and vegetables. Winters here are not extremely cold and the average winter temperature does not fall below -15 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit). By the way, in Russia the real warmth doesn’t start until the middle of April. And only in the end of May does everything start to bloom and people go without their warm clothing.

However, there are cities in Russia where the weather resembles the climate of some American States. For example, in Sochi the summer air temperature warms up to about +40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Therefore in Southern Russia especially near the sea shores or the lakes there are lots of resorts. In the summer time people travel here to enjoy the warm water and get a good tan. In Sochi you will find both: hotels with famous names and small private cottages. Russian resorts are modern and comfortable. There are lots of great attractions for tourists. By the way we have amazing hotels beside the sea with swimming pools. Savour the summer!

What to Pack

Be sure to pack clothing that is breathable and comfortable for your summer trip to Russia. Lightweight slacks for men and summer dresses for women are preferable to shorts; shorts can prevent you from seeing major Orthodox cathedrals because of dress code, and you’ll fit into the local fashion scene more readily. You will likely be doing plenty of walking when you visit Russia, so bring a couple of pairs of comfortable shoes.

The weather in Moscow and St. Petersburg is not likely to be very hot, for June they say it will be +15-25 degrees Celsius (59–77 degrees Fahrenheit). Summer evenings there are quite pleasant, with lots of opportunities to have dinner and drinks on one of the many outdoor cafes. You should probably take a light jacket (preferably rain-proof) regardless of which time you go, because you can have an occasional cool night any time. Rain should not be too much of a problem, although like other places, it can happen any time.

When you’re sightseeing or touring in the summer, be sure to remember to wear sunblock. Getting sunburned early in your trip will make the rest of your visit less pleasant. Don’t forget to protect your ears, the back of your knees, face, and other areas of exposed skin with a good-quality sunscreen that will last throughout the day.

Not so scary Russian bear

Don’t be afraid of cold. Enjoy sun and sea, interesting outdoor activities, picnics in the park and tons of delicious ice cream here. What are only the magic white nights and drawbridges in St. Petersburg! This is a must see. Summer in Russia is a special time. You will definitely like it.
