Sports Card Values Can Be Hurt Long-Term by Too Much Early Hype

Sometimes, if a player is extremely hyped with extremely high valued cards right out the gate (think: LaMelo Ball; think: Wander Franco), unless that player reaches to have an almost ‘one of the greatest of all-time’ type of careers, hiscards are almost inevitably going to decrease in value over time. In fact, their initial unrealistic hype could end up hurting their value long-term when compared to players who don’t start with such crazy hype.

I’ve been doing research recently on players who came into their professional sport with incredible hype, and for many of them, even if they did end up with really solidly good careers… like multiple all-stars or even borderline hall-of-fame kind of careers… if they were the kind of player that had crazy high hype upon entering the NBA, then quite often they almost become deemed a failure, despite their excellent career. In the hobby, this can hurt their cards’ value to an extreme degree. There are a number of examples that could be highlighted, Glenn Robinson, Derrick Coleman, Jason Kidd- so many really, but for this video let’s look at one example: Jerry Stackhouse.

When Stackhouse was drafted 3rd in the 1995 NBA Draft, expectations were extremely high. As a 6’6” shooting guard out of North Carolina, he was dubbed to be the next Michael Jordan. And he came out the gate…
