This series will use different advanced basketball stats and metrics to rank the best UAAP Season 82 Basketball Players.

As defined by the nbastuffer.com player effiency rating is a player evaluation metric that boils down all of a player’s contributions into one number. John Hollinger‘s formula adds positive stats and subtracts negative ones through a statistical point value system. Though as what John Hollinger has mentioned, defensive statistics such as steals and blocks may distort a player’s defensive value.

The formula for the PER is actually very complicated, even I didn’t have the means to accurately get it. The full version of the formula can be found in this article by Basketball Reference. Instead, I used a simplified version of the PER by Bleacher Report’s Zach Fein found here.

Simplified PER Weights

One look at the formula and you can see how volume shooters are rewarded in this metric. Field goals made has the largest weight and while the PER tries to negate it with field goals missed, I feel that it is not enough. Expect to see shooters in this metric.

Here are the top 10 players based on the metric player efficiency rating:

*Note that for Parts 3 to 5, players who are eligible in the rankings must have a usage rate that is above league average because the three metrics focus on efficiency rather than accumulated stats. We will also be starting to show the true shooting percentage. True shooting percentages that are not ranked did not meet the requirements (free throw attempts, 2 point attempts and 3 point attempts must be above league average).
