Italian football: Back Juventus to keep up their winning run over Napoli
The Coppa Italia reaches the semi-final stage as two of Italy’s biggest sides face off this evening, with Juventus hosting Napoli.
These two have dominated Italian football in recent years — they’ve won four of the last five Coppa Italias, with Juve winning the last five Serie A titles.
The Old Lady look well set to claim another league trophy this season — they sit seven points clear with 12 games remaining after another year of dominance.
Napoli sit third — still well in control for a Champions League spot, but the cup seems their best chance of silverware.
Within the next week they face Juve, second placed Roma, and then European Champions Real Madrid — not the easiest run for Maurizio Sarri’s side.
They lost the first Champions League leg 3–1 to Real Madrid, before a surprising 2–0 reversal at home to Atalanta on Saturday, meaning the Light Blues come into that run without much confidence.
That’s something Juventus don’t lack — they’ve won 11 out of 12 so far in 2017, and are looking to make it nine victories on the spin this evening.
Ivaylo Chochev’s 90th minute consolation in a 4–1 win against Palermo was the only goal Max Allegri’s side have conceded in their last eight, with Gigi Buffon and his famed defence in inspired form.
While Napoli have plenty of attacking talent in their side (beating Bologna 7–1 at the start of the month), they’ve only managed four goals in the four games since. Up against the near-impenetrable Juve wall, I can’t see them finding a way through.
