English Bookmakers Set Leicester City at 4,999-to-1 Odds for 2017
LONDON — The odds for the 2016-2017 Premier League are out and they reflect the achievement of 2016 underdog champion Leicester City, which won at 5,000-to-1 odds after nearly being relegated. The reigning champs open at 4,999-to-1 for next season.
“We got burned pretty bad last year, obviously,” said Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Tinhill. “So a readjustment was in order and a readjustment has been made. We had to show due respect for a champion.”
If Leicester City repeats, they would be the first club to do so since Manchester United won in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
“It’s unlikely they repeat,” said Tinhill. “It just doesn’t happen a lot. And, come on, them winning was still totally freakish. They’re not actually that good. Let’s be reasonable.”
Ladbrokes and other English sports books lost huge sums on Leicester City this year and are setting up to do so again if the Foxes managed to repeat. But they’re not concerned about the bottom line.
“We’re only two years from the 2018 World Cup,” said Tinhill. “We make insane sums of money every four years thanks to all the people who are dumb enough to bet on England. No 5,000–to-1 or 4,999-to-1 Premier League champion can sink us when we print money ever World Cup.”
