No. 2 LSU Facing Drop All the Way to No. 3 In Playoff Rankings If They Lose to Alabama
BATON ROUGE, LA — LSU Tigers head coach Les Miles isn’t taking any risks in motivating his team before Sunday’s big matchup with fellow SEC power Alabama, telling his team they could drop from No. 2 all the way down to No. 3 in the playoff rankings if they lose.
“There’s a lot on the line and I’ve made that clear to the players,” said Miles. “If we win, we move up to No. 1. But a loss will see is tumbling down to No. 3 … well, unless it’s close. Then we’ll probably be kept at No. 2.”
Alabama head coach Nick Saban, whose 7–1 team currently sits at No. 4 — ahead of eight undefeated teams despite a loss to Ole Miss this year in which they gave up 43 points — shared similar sentiments with his players.
“As long as we don’t lose by 50 or more, I think the committee will realize that we deserve to stay in the Top 4 on account of our SEC schedule,” said Saban. “But I don’t think we want to leave it to chance. We’re going to try to win and get to No. 1.”
If Alabama does get the victory, Saban said they will forfeit their remaining three games and begin preparing for the playoff in January.
“If we beat LSU, we’ll have made our case,” he said. “I’m not risking my players health for three meaningless games. The committee will know how good we are and will put us in.”
No. 10 Florida also has a big game this Saturday at home. If the Gators are able to get a win versus a powerful SEC opponent in Vanderbilt, they are expected to jump into the Top 4, displacing Clemson or Ohio State.
