Pro leagues collaborate on new ad campaign, “Sports: A great thing to distract you from the world ending!”

NEW YORK — The four major American sports leagues, as well as the MLS and several minor leagues, have collaborated on a new ad campaign they hope will remind fans that sports provide a great distraction from everything that is terrible around them.

“There is a lot of concern about where our country is heading and what it could mean, and a lot of the people who could be impacted are fans of the NBA,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. “While there’s very little we as citizens can do to stop any of it, as depressing as that may be, we can still give ourselves a brief bit of distraction by watching amazing athletes dunk, score a goal, throw a touchdown pass or hit a home run. Hopefully sports can help us all get through this and maybe we’ll all even stay sane somehow thanks to sports.”

The ad campaign will run on television and the web as a unified effort to raise viewership of all sports and help the nation cope.

“If anything good comes out of this, maybe it’s higher TV ratings,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “If NFL ratings go up — and they’ve skyrocketed since the election — I’m more than fine with all the other leagues seeing an increase, too. A rising tide raises all boats, right?”

The NHL is also running additional ads boasting that they have more teams in Canada than any other major North American league.

“If enough people move from the United States, I truly believe we can get a franchise back in Quebec City,” said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
