THE NFL IS A ZERO-SUM GAME. One team’s shocking breakout is another team’s disappointing season. Every upset win for an underdog is a killer loss for a favorite. It’s all fun and games picking sleepers and long shots, but every sleeper takes the spot of another team expected to make the playoffs.

Today we’ll look at the teams on the sad end of the spectrum, 8 teams set to disappoint in 2020. Some teams may expect to be in the playoff hunt but end up near the top of the draft. Some presumed contenders will struggle to make the playoffs at all. It’s really hard to win games in the NFL. Not every team can win 10 games season after season. Not even the New England Patriots.

These eight teams aren’t necessarily below average or near the league’s cellar dwellers. Disappointment comes in all shapes and sizes. A step back from 13–3 can still mean 10–6 and a division title. But the one thing today’s teams have in common is that they’ll be worse than they were a year ago — and that they aren’t serious Super Bowl contenders.
