NFL meet technology. All NFL players on all teams this year will have motion tracking chips embedded in their uniforms. This allows for the collection of data that’s never been available before.

How fast is that receiver’s speed heading down the field? What kind of speed burst did he have after making that cut?

But it’s not just the teams that will get the data. Fans can too. Right now, it’s only available to people with Xbox One app. The “next generation stats” will be baked into the replays and give a whole different perspective.

There’s talk there will be a rollout for Windows 10. Microsoft has a deal with the NFL so only Microsoft products will get the data for the first year.

Looks cool. Has potential. Still in its infancy. As demos from Microsoft and Zebra Technology show, they can pull some amazing stats. It might take 7–10 minutes for it to show… and right now they still aren’t tracking the ball. So, I watched the video and thought it was cool to see players moving around… but where the ball went, when it was released, how fast it was going, isn’t available yet… and critical to understanding the play. But, nice advancement in technology.

Hey! Maybe the Patriots were letting air out of the footballs to make room for the tracking sensor! Yup. That’s it.
