Boston Celtics Offseason Preview
After a short period to grieve Boston’s lost season (don’t worry, we’ll be back next year), I’m ready to delve into how Boston can best maneuver through the coming offseason and free agency period. I won’t be addressing the NBA Draft, seeing as Boston only had a late second-round pick (JD Davison was the selection) and saw little action on draft night. So let’s get into it.
Trades
With Brad Stevens at the helm of the front office, having the green light from majority owner Wyc Grousbeck to be aggressive on the trade market, expect Boston to be VERY active. Dangling picks and young role players will be a tactic used by Boston’s front office to hopefully nab a reliable vet to help more come playoff time. Payton Pritchard, Aaron Nesmith, and even Grant Williams could be on the move.
Also worth noting is that Boston is in possession of a trade exception worth approximately $17.1 million, gained after trading Evan Fournier to the Knicks. Boston could use this TPE, along with some draft capital, to trade for many solid role players with contracts that fit into the budget of the TPE. Some possible options there include but are not limited to:
- Larry Nance Jr. → $9.6M
- Seth Curry → $8.4M
- Royce O’Neal → $9.2M
- Jordan Clarkson → $13M
