The second leg of what is otherwise known as the Sunshine Double will be played in Miami in the coming week. Along with the Indian Wells Open, the Miami Masters is among the two high-profile hard court tournaments that was not long back referred to as the “Fifth Major”.

Even as the 39th edition of the 12-day extravaganza gets underway, let’s go back in time and look at a former champion, a player who secured a significant personal achievement in Miami 25 years ago, one that also turned out to be the last of his career.

Richard Krajicek established his status as one the game’s all-time greats by winning the men’s singles title at Wimbledon. However, the Dutchman could never replicate his success at the All England Club in 1996 at another Grand Slam tournament. In fact, while the player made it to the last four stages of a major tournament on three separate occasions, he never played in another such final.

Two memorable weeks
