Studies on retired NFL players showing brain injuries have taken place post-mortem by examining the brains, but the results of a new study presented at an American Academy of Neurology meeting point to extremely high rates of traumatic brain injuries among living NFL football players. More than 40 percent of the retired players participating in the study showed signs of the condition — a rate that is much higher than the general population.
