THE NBA IS A SUPERSTAR LEAGUE, SO HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE DOES COACHING REALLY MAKE? Coaching matters quite a bit. It matters when the regular season drones on, matters in the final two minutes when you need that perfect play, matters especially in May and June when every scheme and adjustment is critical.

It used to be that a few great NBA coaches stood head and shoulders above their peers — not that they were so great, but that so many others were terrible. The playing field has been leveled now, and well over half the league should be very happy with their NBA coach. Even still, seven coaches rose above the rest, and one elite coach was a slam dunk 2020 Coach of the Year.

The 2019–20 is on extended hiatus, so we’ve moved into awards season. Let’s make some honorable and dishonorable mentions and count down this season’s seven Coach of the Year candidates…

HONORABLE MENTIONS
