No Fondue for Federer, He Received Only Breadsticks in Barcelona
Looking back at the lone instance when the Swiss maestro featured in the main draw at the Torneo Godó.
The debate regarding the greatest men’s tennis player ever (The GOAT), spanning generations, is a never-ending one. However, among the names that will always rank high in any such list is that of Roger Federer.
During an illustrious career that spanned almost two decades, the now-retired player won a lot. A haul of 20 Grand Slam singles’ titles, 28 ATP Masters 1000 trophies, six ATP Finals triumphs, and 103 ATP tournament wins (in 157 finals) overall highlights the fact that he was a dominant player for the most part of his career.
What makes the Swiss Maestro’s achievements even more incredible is the fact that, like the other members of the so-called Big Three (Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic), Federer won big tournaments even on a surface that was probably his least preferred. Unlike other legendary players like Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker, Federer managed to win the Grand Slam that eluded him the most.
Having finished second best (to Nadal) in three successive finals (2006–08)…
