The Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback was seen as an excellent prospect but has already eclipsed even the most optimistic predictions

After entering the NFL in 2017 and sitting for all but the final game of his rookie season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has become the face of professional football in the three years since. Still just 25, he already has an MVP award and a Super Bowl win to his credit, with many more very possibly on the horizon. But how was the Kansas City Chiefs’ signal caller evaluated on scouting reports when he was coming out of college at Texas Tech?

Mahomes has quickly become known for pinpoint accuracy and a savant-like ability to improvise on the fly. In 36 career regular season games, this has allowed him to rack up 10,886 passing yards, 89 touchdowns and just 19 interceptions. With the very real possibility that he can be even better than he has shown thus far, the Chiefs locked up the gunslinger with a historic 10-year contract extension earlier this year that could be worth up to a record $503 million — making it the largest pact in professional sports history.
