World Cup Preview

On Sunday, the 2022 World Cup, awash in controversy and acrimony from nearly everyone, including this writer, will begin with the host nation, Qatar, meeting Ecuador in Doha on Sunday. The world’s biggest stand-alone sporting event will conclude four weeks later on December 18.

From the corruption of FIFA to Qatar’s abysmal human rights record and their reluctance to change their laws (or suspend them) for the tournament (flogging for drinking beer?) is a reason for many fans and supporters to stay home. Wales, who last made the tournament in 1958, the year I was born, was trying to secure ‘safe’…
