On Sunday, the 2022 World Cup, awash in controversy and acrimony from nearly everyone, including this writer, will begin with the host nation, Qatar, meeting Ecuador in Doha on Sunday. The world’s biggest stand-alone sporting event will conclude four weeks later on December 18.
