“The Rock” in a Commendable Generosity to a UFC fighter, Themba Gorimbo
This shows a man who has a flesh of steel but a heart of gold and a mind of love
Dreams come true for someone, somehow, somewhere, sometime. In August, 2023; a hitherto struggling kickboxing Welterweight fighter of Zimbabwean extraction had his dream come true, albeit dramatically.
The meeting between The Rock and Themba Gorimbo was shared on YouTube by Dewayne Douglas Johnson, himself on August 3, 2023.
Dewayne Douglas Johnson is an example of how to be benevolent to a fault, maybe. This is clearly a way to make the world a better place, if you ask me.
The former WWE star, Dewayne Douglas Johnson, famously known as The Rock, was a popular athlete in his hey days. The much I had known about him though was not beyond what he did in the wrestling ring as a WWE fighter.
Secondly, I have watched a couple of movies he starred in as a Hollywood star. Most, if not all of them, were action-filled thrillers. Those were the most of my understanding of his illustriously successful career.
Little did I know about his philanthropic disposition. In other words, beyond his physical body of steel (seen several times on his WWE bouts): lied or lies a heart and a mind for humanity, sacrifice and welfare for the apparently downtrodden.
(The stories I heard or read about him however was both noble and positively unimaginable to me. First, it was a certain pastor that narrated how he had handsomely surprised a certain homeless church worker with a house.
Of course, I could not tell when that actually took place. But that should not reduce the authenticity of the story.)
As if that was a tip of the iceberg, he recently was confirmed to have gifted a budding UFC fighter a house in the United States of America. The 52-year-old American actor-cum-businessman had learnt of the difficulties which the young kickboxing star had suffered and promised to help him boost his career.
Themba Gorimbo was given a house when The Rock discovered that the UFC star had only $7.49 in his bank account balance. “The Rock” Johnson exchanged a couple of texts with the star before he finally decided to gift him a house in Miami, Florida.
In a repost and response to Gorimbo’s post on X, The Rock hinted how he had faced similar financial balance at a time. He recognized how chilly such experience could be hence the mouth-watering gift.
Johnson marvelled at how the winner of a UFC fight in Las Vegas, Nevada could be living in a gym with next to nothing account balance of just $7. He made up his mind to do something, and something he did.
After a couple of exchange of chats, Mr Johnson actually tricked him by telling him they were meeting at a friend’s apartment. On getting there, The Rock handed over the keys of the apartment to the 33-year-old fighter.
He told the younger man that his major concern should be how to bring his family to their new home. The Zimbabwe-born UFC star became emotional as he realized the positive game being played by the former WWE star.
He recalled how he had literally fought to survive recently. He said that after winning the fight, he barely lived from the proceeds which remained about $7 in his account.
The much excited Themba Gorimbo could not thank The Rock enough as he further announced beside his new home, that he would donate the supposed money to buy a house to build a borehole for the people in his community in Zimbabwe.
What a way to make the betterment of the world go round, one would say.
It should be noted that the African UFC fighter lost his mother when he was only 9. As if that was not tragic enough, he also did lose his father at the age of 13.
Life of struggle, hardship and poverty was not new to him.
Being involved in an illegal mining of diamonds in his native country, the kickboxer was once bitten by dogs as he was caught in the act. He had bled and lost some blood.
Such story of tumbling upon fortune, no doubt, is a soul lifter anyday, anytime to anyone who has passed through certain forms of life’s daunting challenges, especially financially. Therefore, it was a radical transformation for him: from depression to ascension.
To have a house of his own where his wife and children would experience true peace and bliss was a no mean feat. He could train and concentrate on his fights and endeavor to become the champion he promised The Rock he would be.
On a lighter note, how I wish The Rock would gift me $15,000! That would be an unprecedented change from everything unfortunate to everything fortunate.
