Spotcoin hosted the first NEO Black Sea Blockchain Hackathon September 28–30. In search of blockchain solutions for the Georgian government, thirteen development teams participated, mostly from the Black Sea Region with some developers also from Egypt. Over two days, they provided innovative and inspiring solutions to everyday governmental problems and we are honored to announce the winner: Georgian NEO Token.

The Event, by the Numbers

Before we jump into the winner’s project, we just want to let you know about the participants. We had 13 hackathon teams join us, with seven presenting projects to the government representatives. On those teams, four women and 26 men sought to solve government issues with innovative solutions. The ages ranged from 17 years old to 50 years old, a mirror of the blockchain community. And a special top team from NEO Global Development, led by Johnson Zhao, flew a combined total of 27,040 KM to join us and search for solutions. Spotcoin, a founding partner of the NEO Black Sea Community, really appreciates everyone’s participation. You made the event a success.

Now, onto the projects!

Winner: Georgian NEO Token

George Laghidze from Georgian NEO Token explained their driving focus when he said, “Georgia needs a new way of exploring things, a new way for becoming popular.” With this in mind, Georgian NEO Token’s project focused on a decentralized program that incentivizes tourism and encourages the world to visit Georgia. By doing so, real people will provide real reviews in real time and have an opportunity to earn tokens as a reward, all built on the blockchain. The loyalty program engages people with technology and provides the Georgian government an opportunity to become more popular.

The central aspect of blockchain technology to make government better drove the selection of the winner. Chris Dawe, CEO of Effect.ai, one of the judges, explained that “Traditional businesses try to add blockchain option. Sometimes it works perfectly, and other times it doesn’t. A project like this, [blockchain] works perfectly. Georgian NEO Token’s project is a smart one, and it works very well. I’m hopeful for their future and what they are doing.”

Congratulations to Georgian NEO Token for their win. They won approximately 1,300 GAS ( worth $7,500 USD) and the prospect of further incubating their project and presenting it to more members of the Georgian government. We will be keeping our eyes out in the future!

We want to highlight a few of the other innovative projects to watch.

2nd place: People’s Voice

Our second-place team was People’s Voice. Gela Maghaltadze from People’s Voice explained their project’s focus, the idea that “democracy is about people being involved in the process as much as possible.”

From that root, People’s Voice encourages citizen involvement and encourage engagement via polls and referendums. With more citizen involvement via the blockchain, it will decrease the cost of referendums and increase engagement. Their focus is on innovating the blockchain and expanding use cases beyond crypto.

3rd place: Golden Fleece

Vakhtang Gogokhia, CEO of Golden Fleece accepted the third-place spot at our Hackathon. Their project focuses on integrating diplomas in the blockchain will help future employees ensure educational diplomas and experience are authentic. They especially highlight NEO’s ecosystem, which is fast, cheap, and scalable.

A Word of Thanks

Spotcoin wants to thank all participants, including the winners, as well as other projects like Vobi and Wsafe, who engaged in the event and provided the NEO Black Sea Community keen insight into how government and blockchain technologies can make for a better world.

Tim Gick, CEO of Spotcoin is especially proud of the teams, the participation and the solutions. He said, “This event paves the way for future, more robust events where we can develop more solutions for not just Georgia but the entire Black Sea region.”

So, keep an eye out for future opportunities and how we can continue to grow and make digital currencies work for everyone.
