The Impacts of Chinese Tourists on Liverpool Souvenir Stores

When you walk in Liverpool, you will often hear the local passers-by or convenience store owner in Chinese saying “NIHAO” to the Chinese tourists. Almost every famous spot in Liverpool can see the introduction of Chinese version. Every year there will have lots of Chinese tourists come here to travel, and everywhere will full of Chinese smell, Chinese tourists have also brought a lot of different effects to Liverpool.

With the increasing number of Chinese tourists come to Liverpool each year, expect the Liverpool Tourism Bureau and some local speciality restaurants the most benefit from Chinese tourists is the souvenir shop. People like to buy gifts at souvenir stores, while Chinese tourists become the main source of these souvenir stores.

Anees Rahman is a student who studies in Liverpool University and he also is a keeperof a souvenir store, he said:” Every year, the number of Chinese tourists buying souvenirs here is always more than other countries tourists, and they make a great contribution to our turnover.”

The owner of another souvenir shop called Christina Linane also said that during the holidays, at least 1,000 Chinese tourists came to buy souvenirs every month. “I am very happy; because this made me take a good harvest every year.And also I have learnt some Chinese words in order to attract Chinese tourist.”

What’s more, in order to attract more Chinese tourists, Some souvenir shops also launch some items that mixed Chinese and Western cultures; for example, the chopsticks printed with the word “Liverpool”.

Chinese tourists not only bring certain influence to the economic development of Liverpool, but also spread Chinese culture here and make Chinese and Western cultures blend with each other.

Liverpool has the first Chinatown in England and throughout Europe, but most of the local British impression of Chinese culture comes from the Chinatown, these year the Chinese who living in the Chinatown are becoming more British and locals. So the foreigners cannot contact the new Chinese culture.

Christina Linane said: “I think Chinese tourists are one of the most important channels for our local people to contact Chinese cultures, their impact on our lives is enormous. I have to say I love those impacts! I look forward to more Chinese tourists come here to travel.”

Therefore, the arrival of Chinese tourists updated the British impression of China and brought more interesting “new Chinese culture” here. Liverpool’s Chinese atmosphere has become thicker and thicker.
