Colours can be classified as one of the most important aspect of any design. This is because it’s the first thing the user sees and also the first impression your site makes to a potential client. Most people will decide to like a brand based on colours alone even before looking at the content the brand has to offer.

So when designing, some relevant questions should be asked like:

  • What kind of emotion should be passed across to consumers in the brand message?
  • Do they have a current colour scheme?

When you see a site with a lot of cool colours say blue for instance, how do you feel? Most people feel a sense of security and trust. Just like it is crucial to choose the right colour for your brand logo, it’s equally as crucial to choose the right colour scheme for your website. you shouldn’t choose your colour schemes randomly based on whatever looks cool to you. You can choose a colour scheme based on some preferences.

Generally speaking, older people prefer more subtle colours. Basically they like colours that speak “calmness”. But most young people prefer colours that speak “boldness” like Red, Green, Pink and the likes.

Colour preferences by gender

Research suggests that men and women have different colour preferences. Men prefer blue but don’t like brown, pink or purple. On the other hand, women like purple, pink and blue but don’t like brown. You need to consider if your audience is primarily one gender or both. So you’ll know how to blend colours to suit both.

Although people don't always respond the same way to colours and there will always be different interpretations and emotions across cultures and location. This is why it is important to place your audience at the forefront of any branding, design or marketing activity
