While the film has been massively successful, Dune: Part One flew under most people’s radar. By observing Wikipedia page view data, we can begin to understand just how successful the second one has been. Dune: Part One was released September 1, 2021. With a budget of $160 million the film netted $431.1 million at the box office. Looking at the Wikipedia page view data for Dune: Part One, we can see that it has several spikes. The first two spikes occur around the film’s release date. This spike could likely be caused by hype beginning to revolve around the Sequel. Dune: Part 2 was announced shortly after the release of the first film on October 21, 2021 so this is most likely not the cause of the spike in 2022. Another theory for this spike is delay announcements. Dune: Part 2 had an initial release date of October 20, 2023 yet was delayed until 2024 when the news broke on August 25, 2023. The delays came as a result of writers strikes in Hollywood which put many films back. Finally, we can observe the last and major spike in page views which occurred in 2024. This spike is directly related to the release of the second film. In the history of the Wikipedia page for Dune: Part One, the page views never exceeded 400 daily views until the second film’s release. An alternate factor that could have factored into the film’s underwhelming performance on a Wikipedia page view perspective is COVID. Dune: Part One was released roughly a year and a half after the major lock downs of March 2020. While states were beginning to open up around this time, many people were either hesitant or unable to head to the cinema to catch this film .This page view data gives a glimpse at how the first film flew under the radar relative to its sequel.

The film was massively successful, bringing in over $667 million on a $190 million dollar budget. The spikes in 2024 are directly related to the film’s release date of February 15, 2024 and wave leading up to align with the amount of marketing pushed out for the film. The smaller spike in 2023 can be attributed to the highly anticipated release of the second trailer which came out on June 29, 2023. Overall the page view count data highlights the massive success the second release achieved. The film received an audience score of 95% and a critic rating of 93% on rotten tomatoes further emphasizing its success.

In summary, analyzing Wikipedia page views reveals a stark difference in the reception between Dune: Part One and Dune: Part 2.
