Traveling is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with different cultures and a variety of lifestyles. When I get back from a trip, I try to incorporate healthy practices I found compelling into my everyday life at home in Canada. This article takes you on a trip, outlining common healthy habits in 4 countries.

  • Greece — Eat well

Regarded as one of the healthiest diets in the world, the Mediterranean diet is based around fruit and veggies, grains, fish, beans, olive oil and small amounts of dairy. Indulge in the healthy stuff!

  • The Netherlands — Live an active life

Get moving! For the Dutch, bikes are an integral part of everyday life and almost outnumber the amount of cars on the road! Try to aim for at least one active commute to work each week. You don’t have to bike if that’s not an option for you. Other alternatives would be to park further away from your office or get a ride in the morning and walk home.

  • India — Spice it up

Use Indian spices such as cumin, coriander, mustard seeds, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon to flavour your cooking! Spices aid digestion and ensure proper absorption of nutrients.

  • Spain — Take a Siesta

In Spain, it’s very common for people to take a short 15–20 minute nap at some point during the day. Often stores might close for a few hours after lunch until dinner. I’ve learned to go a little easier on myself in the afternoon and might even take a midday nap to get an extra energy boost if I feel like I need it to get through my day.

Here’s to the next adventure!
