Bridging the Digital Divide: Spurt! Celebrates the Day of the Girl Child
October 11 is not just a date on the calendar; it is a global call to action. The International Day of the Girl Child is a reminder that when girls are given the resources and support they need, they not only uplift themselves but also the communities around them. Don’t roll your eyes or assume it’s a platitude: Educated women are more likely to invest in their children’s education, creating a positive cycle of learning within the family and community. Educated women are also more likely to enter the workforce, which increases a family’s income and contributes to economic development.
Spurt! takes this ethos to heart. As an organisation deeply rooted in propelling African communities forward, we believe that empowering girls in the digital realm is not an option but a necessity. Our mission, to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and innovation, finds resonance in our practices, structure, and culture.
The narrative of the girl child in the digital age is not just about crossing the digital divide; it’s about owning the narrative and being the scriptwriter of a story that is empowering and enduring. On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at 18h30 UTC, we are honoured to host a celebratory and expository panel, shedding light on how girls are being empowered to thrive in our digital era. The panel will feature Costanza Casullo of Watoto Coding, Celestine Ukpere of Shule Africa, Francisca Igwe of Payaza Africa, Adaeze Eche-George of Corona Management Systems, and Yasmeen Adebisi of MTN Nigeria, a confluence of ideas and inspirations. This event, executed in partnership with the Isodokan Foundation, reflects the collective efforts of many towards the common cause of girl-child empowerment.
Our panelists, each torchbearer in their respective fields, will unpack the potential of digital literacy and highlight the pathways into STEM careers for girls, and the conversation is set to be as enlightening as it is engaging. We invite you to be part of this insightful journey.
Join us in not only celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child but in taking a step towards a more inclusive digital future.
