Welcome to Square 1 and thanks for checking us out. Square 1 is a podcast aimed at illuminating issue based organizing and activism in Washington, D.C. and exploring the different types of power that shape our community at the local level. Each show will focus on a specific topic and feature two interviews with folks doing related work. The first interview will help provide a framework for thinking about the issue and the second will feature an activist struggling at the grassroots level. We’ll also provide specific calls to action for folks looking to get involved, share resources to help listeners learn more, and feature a local music act during each show to reinforce the importance of art in building community.

Our goals are to highlight the issues and movements that most impact our community and to amplify the voices of those doing the hard work of building the power needed to drive meaningful change. To that end, we plan to focus on issues such as immigrant rights and D.C.’s status as a sanctuary city, education reform, gentrification and displacement in D.C. neighborhoods, and the struggle against racism embodied by the #BlackLivesMatter movement. But we also want to hear from you so that we focus on issues that motivate our audience and lift up the voice we may not yet had heard. If you have a show idea that you want to hear, or have a story to share with us, don’t hesitate to hit us up.

You can follow the show on Twitter (@Square1Show) for new episodes and such, and holler at David (@abigasianman) and Zach (@ZachSchalk) to let us know what we’re doing right, what we’re doing wrong, and how we can get better. We’ll be updating this blog with show notes and between shows (though we’re both working dudes, so no promises there…), so hopefully you’ll keep coming back and tell a friend!

See you in the streets!
