Algorithmic Bias and Fairness

AI algorithms are only as good as the data they’re trained on. Unfortunately, biased data can lead to biased algorithms, perpetuating social inequalities in areas like loan approvals, hiring decisions, and even criminal justice. If the training data used to build an AI model reflects historical biases around race, gender, age or other protected characteristics, the model can simply perpetuate those human biases at machine scale.

  • Test Models against benchmark datasets to check for discriminatory outputs.
  • Set acceptable thresholds and guard-rails for allowable bias levels.

  • Allow user inputs to explore “what-if” scenarios to see how outputs change.
  • Caution about the AI ability and scope. Provide clear notice and get consent from users when AI is involved and use simple non technical language to describe the functionality. For example how a specific product was recommended to the user while placing an order.
  • Provide users a way to override AI generated outcomes when possible.

There need to be clear processes for monitoring AI actions and enforcing guidelines around fairness, transparency and human values.Without mechanisms to audit decisioning processes and enact course corrections, AI could make critical mistakes or unethical choices while lacking true accountability.

  • Implement a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) Approach. For example, design workflows where humans can validate or approve high stake decisions.
  • Establish an AI ethics review committee. Establish clear governance framework and review the policies/guidelines regularly.
  • Provide comprehensive training of employees. Educate decision makers on AI capability, limitations and potential risks.
  • Develop contingency plans. Create protocols to quickly disable AI systems, have human based backup ready in cause of AI failure.
