A Student Representative Council should exist for every and all students. It should be a body in which students shape and guide, and its decisions are reflective of the student body. However, often when we think of the people in SRC, we think of those who have had prior experience and those who are able to win an election in their form. This is a direct result of the only way to be a part of the SRC being through an application, interview or election. As a result, we get more barriers and more students being rejected from an organisation that is supposed to be for everyone.

SRC should be an organisation and a body that all students can actively be a part of, but in reality that hasn’t been the case. That’s why the SRC Member role has come into existence. You may have heard of the term “general rep” being floated around, which essentially is where this role evolved from. The “general rep” role was one where students could apply for, and the cabinet would select them for a few tasks.

But SRC should be about everyone having the chance to have a go, that’s why there’s no application process! Everyone that puts their name down for SRC Member we’ll be able to sign up for what they want to do. SRC Members will be added to Microsoft Teams, in which opportunities to join working groups will be available.

So why the change in names from “general rep” to SRC Member? Well, this name change has been done for a few reasons. Firstly, we felt the term “general rep” didn’t encompass the work that the role involved, and secondly, we wanted to rebrand the role, to make the changes clear (that there is no application process and you choose your commitment).

So that’s the SRC Member role for you, hope that explains our decision and rationale behind the new position. We hope to see you putting your name down on the sign-up form.
