Akshat Nauriyal and Pranav Gohil’s Inside Out Project

Legendary French artist, JR’s global participatory project, Inside Out saw a contribution from photographers Akshat Nauriyal and Pranav Gohil for Sassoon Dock Art Project.

Sassoon Dock is Mumbai’s oldest Dock that is still open to public. This 147 year old dock primarily comprises of three communities. The Kolis, Banjaaraas and the Hindu Marathas. These communities function symbiotically and run Sassoon Dock. When Akshat and Pranav approached them to click their photographs, they were met with vehement opposition. , it Eventually, it came to light that photographers of the past only showed them in a bad light. After a fair amount of coaxing they agreed to participate in the project.

So, a pop up studio was set up. The first two days barely saw any participants. Over the next couple of days, the crowd increased until one day, Pranav saw a crowd of over 100 people. This Inside Out Project saw 374 portraits of inhabitants of Sassoon Dock, now pasted o the facade of the warehouses in the dockyard.
