COVID-19, a strand of the coronavirus is the most recent pandemic to sweep the globe. In its destruction, the virus has infected over 4 million people, sadly taking the lives of 249,000 of these.

We are all affected by COVID-19, whether directly and have had the virus yourself, perhaps a family member or friend was infected, or you lost a loved one.

The only words to describe the entire situation is “utterly devastating”. The United States and the rest of the world will no doubt take months if not years to recover.

However, the virus has also had economic consequences for all nations, especially America. In April alone, 20.5 million American jobs were lost — that’s almost half the population of England.

With so many Americans now looking for a job, definitely, once it’s safe to do so, the competition will be brutal — there are too few jobs to go around as it is (before the virus).

Finding a job after the Covid-19 pandemic

Alongside many individuals losing their jobs, this inevitably left lots of small businesses to shut shop, some closing, and never to re-open.

The virus was unexpected, many businesses were not prepared and are now out on the street.

Inevitably, these small businesses including coffee shops, libraries, restaurants, and startups had to let the majority, if not all of their employees go — amid the virus, they could no longer afford to pay their staff, especially with no incoming business or support.

For those who haven’t lost their jobs, at least not yet, and hopefully, not at all, their workflow has been disrupted, now left to work at home in circumstances unfamiliar.

If you were one of the unfortunate few who lost their job as a result of the virus we are here to help you.

To help you find a job amid the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve put together a few tips — here’s what you need to know.

Polish up your resume

To increase your employability, especially in what will be such as fierce market you’re going to want to polish up your resume.

Your resume is your chance to shine, to show off your skills, your past experience, and who you are as a person.

Be sure to add in all past roles (so long as they are relevant) and any new skills that you may have picked up in your most recent job.

Likewise, if you volunteered during the pandemic then this too I something you should add.

Become familiar with online networking

Online networking is becoming the new norm. This is where you reach out to others using platforms such as LinkedIn and other job search platforms.

Networking involves reaching out to others, perhaps asking them what opportunities they currently have available.

Becoming familiar with networking now allows you to get ahead of the pack. Get more connections on LinkedIn and start connecting with those in your chosen industry or line of work, see what they post and comment on these.

Becoming social is the king of social media. Who would have thought?

Hone your new networking skills to apply for jobs that interest you, if you develop a great relationship with others through networking perhaps ask of any opportunities they have available?

You never know if you don’t ask!

Ask friends and family members for referrals

If you have a family member or friend who is still working, there’s a good chance there could be a need for more employees — especially if their line of work is considered an essential service.

Many people seem to think asking for referrals is rude, however, this generally isn’t the case.

Working for many companies, if you are to refer a worker you receive a bonus — that is, of course, if they are good and believe in the companies values.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t recommend every person you meet, however, helping someone else in need and helping yourself at the same time isn’t the worst thing in the world.

Use this time to learn new skills

Whether in lockdown or left to self-isolate, use this time to learn new skills. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn how to write, input spreadsheet data, or learn the guitar now is the time.

Not only is this fun, but it is also practical.

Some of these skills (maybe not playing the guitar) can be added to your resume, increasing your chance of future employment once the virus comes to an end.

There are plenty of platforms out there to learn as well, SkillShare is the world’s leading online learning platform, with categories including animation, design, lifestyle, and writing there’s sure to be something for you.
