We have a look at some monster returns, dabble in fine art, work from home and share some Stake and Eggs with Warren B. Read on to make sense of it all.

The Hathaway Giveaway

We’ve already reached out saying how pumped we are to have BRK.A on the platform. It’s pretty special to own part (or all) of a US$320,000 stock and we love that all our customers now have that option.

To celebrate, we’re giving away US$1000 to 3 people who either refer friends or join Stake in the month of November. You would have received an email earlier this week but here’s a recap of how to enter.

Mo’ Monet

With BRK.A going live, you can now gain access to one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. Well, you can also join an even smaller circle as a Banksy, Monet or Warhol owner.

Masterworks.io is allowing investors to put their capital in “Blue-Chip art” i.e. the top 100 artists by auction value of their work. Sounds pretty cool. They also boasted a 10.6% return in 2018; impressive. The company buys artwork outright and then resells them at a later date and splits the return amongst shareholders (after their 1.5 and 20 fees are taken out).

It’s not for everyone though, all account seekers must “request an invitation” and “schedule an interview” before being granted access to the club.

Oh, and here’s an interesting article they put together on how art performs during a financial crisis.

Veterans Day

Monday 11th November is Veterans Day in the US. The markets will be open but banks will be closed. As such, settlement on sell trades will be affected as per the following dates:

  • Trades on 7th November, 2019 will settle on 12th November, 2019
  • Trades on 8th November, 2019 will settle on 13th November, 2019
  • Trades on 11th November, 2019 will settle on 13th November, 2019

It’s unlikely that Veterans Day will cause delays in processing money movements, however if you do experience one, this may be the cause.

Working 9–5

Microsoft (MSFT) experimented with a 4-day work week in Japan. By reducing workers’ hours by 20%, productivity was reported to increase by 40%. Workers reported to be happier too. And yes, workers are still paid for 5 days work.

They’re not the first to trial this approach. Shake Shack in the States trialed a similar approach in an effort to attract new employees. Likewise, Perpetual Guardian, a NZ financial services company across made a 4-day work week a permanent arrangement. Find their white-paper on how they made it work here.

I would show this to my bosses but they will make it very clear that I barely work anyway.

Introducing the Stake Breakfast Club

We’re hungry for your feedback on all things Stake to help shape the experience as we grow. So today, we kicked off the Stake Breakfast Club initiative — thanks to Damien, Andrew, Mikey and Carole for joining us! We’ll be running a breakfast every couple of weeks where we come together for a chat, drink some coffee and have a bite.

Places will be limited each event, so if you’re interested in being part of an upcoming Stake Breakfast Club, please let us know at bryan@hellostake.com.

What we’re using | TradingView

Last week we looked after the fundamentalists by having a look at atom.finance. This week it’s all about the technical analysts. TradingView is the best charting tool I’ve come across given the price (free for most features).

But that’s not what I like about it most. The inbuilt screener allows you to filter stock by anything from PE ratios to technical performance and then check the chart all on the same screen.

And for the nerds out there their custom built programming language called PineScript allows you to write programming strategies and backtest them over the history of a stock or index. Even I’ve written a few programs and it’s amazing to see them work.

Best Buy | Pinduoduo (PDD) +32%

It’s not uncommon for our traders to try their luck on Chinese stocks with varying success. They can be volatile and unpredictable but this trader timed the breakout perfectly getting into Pinduoduo (PDD) at just the right time for a 32% gain.
