Polygon has grown from strength to strength over the past several months, growing to almost 97m unique addresses interacting on its blockchain as of October 7 2021.

Growth in unique addresses on Polygon

With a rapid rise in adoption and usage, the network is increasingly susceptible to spam transactions that clog up the network, impacting user experience.

In one example, in the case of block 15798851, the block is 99.99% full.

Investigating this block further are multiple transactions where the bot sends itself 0 MATIC and just paying gas without interacting with any smart contracts.

These transactions are clogging the network and real users would find it much more difficult to make genuine transactions, especially if blocks are fully filled with spam.

In an attempt to curb malicious behavior, Polygon co-founder Sandeep announced in a forum post that it would be raising its network fees from 1 Gwei to 30 Gwei.
